A lot of great Rishonim over the times have predicted the date of the arrival of Moshiach (he should come speedily in our days)! It goes without saying that most if not all of these prediction failed to actualize! So how can we reconcile all these predictions with the facts on the ground?
Did the Rishonim get it wrong when they said Moshiach will be here by a certain date? [closed]
What the Rishonim meant was that it is possible and probable for Moshiach to come at the time. What this means is that the time is extremely Mesugal for the Geula, but of course the generation themselves can spoil it.
(By the way, it gets me very hot under the collar when I hear all the Chassidishe Massehs that had Mr so and so done a certain Mitzvah at a certain time, Moshiach would have come. Why do we only hear these stories afterwards, the Rebbe's should be going to tell people what will bring Moshiach. But those are my own personal feelings.)

Mentch, i also have my own opinion on this and its a little different than yours, but just a quick note, wouldn't telling the person (that the weight on the entire world is now down to his last Mitzvah) drastically diminish (or take away) his free will? Doing so would defeat the whole purpose. The Mitzvah needs to be completely and entirely up to the person doing it w/o input. Its because it was his/her OWN decision that it carries so much weight. - YossiJul 30 '12 at 18:57
