I am 25 years of age and learn in Kolel. I have about 1 and a half hours spare a day which I could put into starting (and hopefully finishing) Daf HaYomi? What are your experiences with it, where are the challenges and how to know if it is not for you. Thanks

I find that the disadvantage with the Daf is that one needs to jam an entire daf (including Misachtas like Eiruvin, Yevumos, Bova Kamma, Chullin etc.) in -at times- less than an hours. Its hardly covered, or rather its impossible to cover to a decent level of understandning. One can learn an entire Misachta and hardly remember anything, let alone to fully understand it. I can never learn like that. On the flip side of this, if one would not open a Gamurah if not for his Daf Shiur, then its by all means a Gavaldiga thing and should be strongly encouraged, but for the serious learner --and by serious i dont mean learning 18 hours a day, i mean the average person who wants to dive into learning and not just davan a daf-- it would probably be a great disadvantage.

I was not aware, but even if, its really hard to keep up with a full daf a day, its way too much with no time to properly digest (for the typical working person). If it was up to me, i'd change it to an Umid a day. But no worries, no one consults with me :) - YossiJul 20  '12 at 00:59

I am thinking about stopping because of the reason you specified but my brother is just starting. :) - DannyJul 20  '12 at 01:17

This is how it appears to me:

Advantages:

  1. Learn a lot of gemara
  2. Kevias itim
  3. You can make your own siyum (on Avodah Zarah ) for the firstborns' fast in 5778 (if you go ahead a little)

Disadvantages:

  1. You won't learn all of Shas (they skip mishnayos Zeraim, Taharos, Avos, Eduyos)
  2. You'll be stuck learning Yerushalmi Shekalim between Pesachim and Yoma

Very simple. Advantage: You get to sleep for over an hour during the day. Disadvantage: You have to wake up six times in the middle just to turn all the pages in the Artscroll that only cover one daf!

1   Lol, reminds me of a story, an elderly Yid was suffering from insomnia, the kids dragged him to docs but they could not track down the issue, until they one day discovered that he made a Shiur in the afternoon. They stopped the Shiur and the insomnia was gone. - YossiJul 19  '12 at 17:48

If you really are a deep thinker and when you learn Gemoro you need the time to think everything through, it might not be the best thing for you. You might find yourself getting mixed up because of the speed. You either gotta be super clever or you have to be the type of person who doesn't have a lot of Shailos because they can really bog you down. Maybe add more hours and then you will be alright?
