My rebbes always taught me that reading Goyishe books is Ossur. When you have a nice clean book like Lord Of The Rings, what could possibly be the problem. If novels in general are bad for you, then why are Jewish ones any better. Obviously I am not talking about books that have indecent parts to them.

First of all, there is always the issue of bitul zman. But that aside, All books promote, to some extent, the beliefs and values of their authors. On some level, books with "no indecent parts to them" can be even more dangerous than books that have obvious problematic sections because the messages are more subliminal, and may not "mesh" with torah messages. For this reason, secular books are more dangerous than "frum" novels.

very true, I recently read a book which looked like a kids book. Its called Of Mice And Men and to the first look it looks fine. But when you think a bit more the Hashkafos that enter your mind afterwards are so terrible they are worse then Pritzus! - shteeblehopperAug 02  '12 at 11:27
