Is it better to stand for Chazaras HaShatz or for Piyutim when the Aron Hakodesh is open

Many people are Noheg to stand up when the Aron is open during the Yomim Noraim even for Piyutim. These same people if they feel tired will sit down during Chazoras HaShatz for example during Malchiyos, Shofros and Zichronos.

Is this the preferred practice? I remember hearing somwwhere that it is better to stand up for the main Chazaras HaShatz rather then when the Aron is open. Anyone got any sources for this?

I saw Harav Chaim Mordechai Zahn Shlita did just that. Stand for chazoras hashatz but sit during piyutim when oroin hakodesh was open.

most people incl poiskim do not do that, however. and stand when oroin hakodesh is open.

This is an issue that has been bothering me for years. The fact is that standing during chzaras hashatz is a chiyuv according do many poskim while standing when the aron is open is at most only a hidur. I know for a fact that Rav Elyashiv and Rav Moshe Shmuel Shapiro z''l both were makpid to stand for all of chazaras hashatz and they sat by the piyutim (even when the aron was open). It seems that this is a common mistake and people assume that standing when the aron is open is a chiyuv. However, since people do stand it is questionable if one may sit down as there might be a bizayon hatorah as the Aruch Hashulcham points out in Y""D 282, 13.

I would add that sitting when someone else is davening near you in his 4 Amos is even worse. That is a clear Halacha and that is least kept on the Yomim Noraim. - Yehuda HaMaccabiSep 08  '13 at 18:16

I saw that the Shulchan Aruch says (not regarding to Yomim Noraim) that one does not need to stand when the Aron is open. When the Sefer Torah is out on must stand, but when the Aron is open one needn't. However it is a meritorious thing to do.
