I seem to remember it being an achron who says that if a person brings in Shabbos early he will rest from Gehinnom on Shabbos early as well? It could be a Chofetz Chaim. Anybody know the exact source?

I know that the reason we extend the Vehu Rachum on Motzei Shabbos is to prolong the break from Gehinom for the Reshaim.

This doesn't seem to be the case based on the wording in the Taamei HaMinhagim in regard to drinking water. When discussing when souls leave Gehenim he says Bein Hashmoshos, when discussing the return to Gehenim he says between Mincha and Maariv.
