Why is it Ossur to swear?

Why do we automatically condemn swearing in Yiddishkeit as Nivul Peh. Shouldnt Nivul Peh only include talking about dirty things, whats wrong with letting out your anger with a swear word. Obviously I understand that it is wrong to vent anger but why is it considered Nivul Peh. Is it because of the translation of the words? I know many people who dont know the translation and still think it is Nivul Peh?

Spot on with this write-up, I really think this website wants far more consideration. I'll probably be again to learn way more, thanks for that info.

It's true that swearing is not necessarily nivul peh. However, it is not lashon nekiyah, clean language, something Chazal (Pesachim 3a) say we should always try to use. Also, anyone who is looked upon by society as an example of what it means to follow the Torah should be extra careful to act in a refined and dignified manner, in order to cause a kiddush Hashem and not a chillul Hashem.

Then even saying something like 'sugars' would be considered bad according to your second reasoning? - gadol hadorAug 16  '12 at 01:23

1   @gadolhador I wouldn't rule it out - it all depends on how people will perceive it. הכל לפי הענין. I should say though that by "refined and dignified" I don't mean to be a malach, I mean to act in a way that is דעתו מעורב עם הבריות. That does not preclude being normal, aderaba, sometimes it davka means being normal. Just not to be a wild, undignified person in people's eyes. - Dov FAug 16  '12 at 02:57

To Dov, dpeaking about Loshon Nekiyah, i've always wondered why sometimes the Torah says which is not Tahor and sometime just goes for the word Tomei. Any ideas? - Burnt OutAug 21  '12 at 22:50

1   Just met a vulgar person who learns all day and heard him swear. I have to say that I agree with you entirely now! - disgruntledGoatAug 28  '12 at 15:12

Just using your mouth to express an emotion that Yiddishkeit bans is itself a form of Nivul Peh!
